My foray into the world of secret supperclubs

Posted by thefoodsnob |

So today is my 30th birthday - the beginnings of a new decade - one which I intend to be full of fun and decadence.  To that end I decided to go to my first secret supper club with friends.  It was fabulous.  I chose Mrs Marmite - The Underground Lover, one of the more well known of these closed door restaurants and probably for very good reason.  She is fun, quirky, irreverent and above all, she makes lovely food.  It is such a great thing to do if you're bored of going to the next best restaurant and spending a fortune, while minding your p's and q's.  Here, its like you own the place, you can be as raucous as you want, take as much alcohol as you want and you get served 4 courses of deliciousness.  We were greeted with a bitter gin cocktail while waitresses weaved their way through Mrs Marmite's warm and inviting lounge with delectable little puff pastries of tomatoes and anchovies.  We sat down to our first course of homemade tortelloni with hand picked mushrooms, courgettes and a cream sauce.  A very rich dish but earthy, woody and flavoursome.  The main was a very simple but tasty dish of salmon cooked in parcels with salad, warm potatoes and roasted vine tomatoes. What followed was every aspiring French cottage owner's dream - a cheeseboard to die for.  By this point I felt nothing but replete.  However - the birthday spectacular was yet to arrive - a huge pavlova awash with glitter, candles and colour.  It was the best dish of the evening - totally yummy.  I then spent a good half an hour rabbiting away with the hostess herself and her delightful waiting staff.  I loved it - great company, fantastic atmosphere, good food, good value and round the corner from my house - what more could you want?

Oh my god - look at the mammoth cheeses!!!!
